Team performance depends on both management discipline and leadership influence. Managers organise work through planning, coordination, and control; leaders shape direction, commitment, and behaviour. In many organisations—especially at supervisory and junior management level—one person must combine both to deliver results consistently while maintaining fairness, trust, and accountability.
This course develops a practical and academically grounded understanding of leading and managing a team. Learners will build clarity about core responsibilities using recognised management functions and managerial roles. Learners will then analyse leadership models as a toolkit for different situations and understand how influence and power operate ethically in teams.
The course also explores motivation, ethics, and organisational culture, showing how they shape team behaviour and management decisions. Finally, learners apply performance improvement routines using objective-setting and review, performance measures, and continuous improvement cycles (PDCA/PDSA), supported by benchmarking and quality improvement thinking.
On completion, learners will be able to diagnose team challenges, justify leadership and management choices using models, and produce a realistic improvement plan with measurable indicators.
